eMarketer announced today that 2010 marks the first year that marketers have put more money into online advertising than they have in newspapers. Total newspaper spending, including in print and online editions has declined by 6.6% and will fall to $25.7 billion dollars by the end of 2010.
On the other hand, online ad spending has increased by 13.9% in 2010 and is expected to rise to $25.8 billion by the end of the year. This gap in spending is expected to widen in the future, favouring online ads over newspaper ads.
In 2011 online ad spending is expected to continue to climb while ad spending on newspapers is expected to continue to decline. Total online ad spending is projected to experience double-digit growth through 2014 where researchers predict it will surpass $40 billion.
